As with other citrus species, the real history of the mandarines is unknown but it is believed to have originated from the northeast of India or southwest of China in the 12th century B.C. Its spread to the world started with the exportation of two different types of mandarines to England from the Cantonese (modern day Guangzhou) region in 1805. Later, mandarine trees were sent to Malta and Italy. Mediterranean mandarine is believed to have developed in Italy. Satsuma mandarines entered Turkey for the first time from Japan through Batumi in the eastern Black Sea region. Nowadays, it is mostly cultivated in the Aegean Region, especially in the surroundings of Izmir and Bodrum.
